Présentée pour la première fois en 2013 pour occuper le terrain sur le marché alors en pleine explosion des roadsters, la R nineT a su évoluer pour combiner un style classique avec la technologie moderne à laquelle nous habitue BMW. Peu de temps après son apparition, la R nineT a été déclinée avec tout d’abord la R nineT Urban G/S. Un modèle reprenant les gènes de la légendaire R 80 G/S de 1980. La R nineT Scrambler est également arrivée au style pur, réduit et anticonformiste, et enfin, la R nineT Pure. Pour 2021, BMW Motorrad a perfectionné l’ensemble de la famille R nineT avec quelques modifications techniques, tout en élargissant considérablement la gamme d'équipements de série et en option. Au cœur de tous les modèles on retrouve le moteur Boxer, désormais conforme aux exigences Euro 5 avec de nouvelles culasses, un couple encore plus élevé et une conception optimisée. Sa puissance maximale est désormais de 109 chevaux à 7 250 tr/min, avec un couple de 116 Nm à 6 000 tr/min. Les nouvelles culasses offrent une transition plus harmonieuse des ailettes de refroidissement extérieures aux ailettes de refroidissement intérieures, et les pièces de papillon des gaz et les couvre culasses nouvellement conçus confèrent désormais à la moto un attrait esthétique encore plus grand. Grâce à une nouvelle courbe de puissance et de couple en particulier entre 4 000 et 6 000 tr/min les niveaux de puissance de traction sont désormais nettement meilleurs que ceux de la précédente génération de R nineT. Même dans la version standard, les nouveaux modèles R nineT sont désormais équipés de l'ABS Pro en combinaison avec le DBC Dynamic Brake Control de série pour une sécurité accrue lors du freinage. Les caractéristiques standards incluent également un nouvel amortisseur WAD, offrant un confort de suspension amélioré et un réglage pratique de la précharge du ressort. Les modes de conduite Rain » et Road » sont désormais également inclus de série.
